Coping with an Eating Disorder

Eating disorders come in several forms. The three most common and well-known types are:

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Binge Eating Disorder (BED)

An eating disorder is a serious mental health condition that profoundly affects your entire life—your identity, your daily functioning, and your physical and emotional well-being. Even after you’ve overcome an eating disorder, it never fully disappears; the door always remains slightly open.

Living with an eating disorder is a continuous struggle that impacts every aspect of your life. It affects not only your emotional and physical health, but also your relationships and your ability to function in society. It demands enormous willpower, determination, and resilience to keep moving forward.

Constantly having to explain—or hide—your eating disorder can consume your thoughts all day long. Even in your sleep, there is little rest. On a subconscious level, you may feel that you are never doing well enough. All of this combined can leave you feeling isolated and deeply misunderstood. You, too, want nothing more than to feel “normal.”

But the courage you show every single day in living with this challenge is admirable. You are not your eating disorder; you are a resilient person with a unique story.

After ending my career as a middle-distance runner—where I constantly had to monitor my weight and diet—I fell into a very deep depression. Before I realized it, I had gained a significant amount of weight and felt completely uncomfortable in my own body. Despite trying to change my habits, my weight kept increasing. I became extremely depressed, which led to even more eating and losing myself further in the struggle with food.

As a runner, I was used to doing everything on my own. But it quickly became clear that I couldn’t overcome my eating disorder without help. I’ve come from a very dark place to where I am now. I still regularly face moments of insecurity, feeling as though I’m failing because of my eating disorder. When those feelings overwhelm me, I revisit the BMGRB report. It contains so many helpful tools and insights that give me the inner strength to cope and move forward.

Self-Acceptance with an Eating Disorder

When you’re living with an eating disorder, it’s important to learn to be gentle with yourself. Try not to think in terms of failure, but in terms of victories. After a binge, it may feel like you’ve failed—but the opposite is true. In the process of overcoming an eating disorder, setbacks happen. Instead of looking back, focus on what lies ahead and be proud of the positive steps you’ve already taken. The real challenge is learning to accept that.

We understand that having an eating disorder is deeply personal, and that sharing your story with us can feel incredibly difficult. It takes courage, strength, and vulnerability to open up.
